n8n 3.0 BETA: reliability, stability, security + migration

n8n 3.0 BETA is here: a foundation release focused on reliability, stability, and security. Breaking changes, Docker-only self-hosted, new Schedule Trigger, and a Migration Report. A practical guide, one n8n 3.0 use case idea, and steps to upgrade with zero downtime risk.

n8n 3.0 is a major step toward more reliable, stable, and secure automations. In the 3.0 line, the team removed legacy features, tightened security defaults, and reworked execution internals. Since 2.0 in December 2025, they shipped over 45 releases, so 3.0 focuses on the foundation. Because it includes breaking changes, you should prepare with the Migration Report that pinpoints what to fix before upgrading.

What is n8n 3.0?

n8n 3.0 is a major update with internal changes that raise reliability, stability, and security, and set the stage for upcoming improvements. It removes legacy features, hardens defaults, and changes how n8n runs under the hood.

The team follows semantic versioning: breaking changes only ship with a major version bump. Over the last year, they accumulated changes that required 3.0: retiring code paths, safer defaults, and removing nodes for defunct services.

New features don’t wait for majors. With over 45 releases since 2.0, shipped roughly weekly, 3.0 can zero in on the foundation. Everything new after the stable release lands on 3.x.

How to run n8n 3.0 beta?

You can try the beta now with no sign-up. For self-hosted, install it like any other beta release; on n8n Cloud, select 3.0.0 Beta (early access) when changing your n8n version.

Before upgrading, take a full backup and test 3.0 on staging or a test instance first. The move to 3.x is irreversible: there’s no rollback to 2.x; restoring from backup is the only way back.

If you valued the npx quick start, there’s now a one-line setup script in the containerized flow that gets you to the same starting point with the new security guarantees.

Key changes in n8n 3.0

In short: stronger stability guarantees, safer defaults, and legacy cleanup. This touches nodes, scheduling, binary data storage, and defenses against abusive workloads.

Reliability and stability. In Queue mode, manual executions always run on workers so the main instance isn’t burdened. The in-memory binary data mode is removed: instances use the filesystem or external storage (S3 etc.), which behaves more predictably under load.

Guardrails against runaway work. The default timeout for the Code node drops from 5 minutes to 1 minute (configurable). Decompression limits are lower to protect instances from oversized archives and “zip bombs.”

Scheduling. The old Cron and Interval nodes are replaced by the Schedule Trigger, running on n8n’s more durable scheduler.

Security. Encryption key rotation is always on. Slack credentials now require a signing secret to prevent forged requests. The default SSRF block list is larger when SSRF protection is enabled. Unverified community packages are off by default.

Legacy node cleanup. Removed: Function, Function Item, Item Lists, Cron, Interval, the legacy OpenAI node, older AI Agent modes, previous versions of Edit Image, nodes for services that no longer exist, and others. Most have direct replacements: Function → Code node; Item Lists → Split Out, Aggregate, Sort, Limit, Remove Duplicates, or Summarize. Many migrate automatically.

Feature changes. Chat Hub is off by default (you can re-enable it on 3.x; the n8n AI assistant and agents are replacing it). Import from URL is removed from the editor, and the Ask AI tab is gone from the Code node.

How to prepare for the n8n 3.0 upgrade?

Start with the Migration Report — your main tool for a smooth transition. It shows exactly which workflows and settings are affected, and auto-fixes many items.

Every instance on version 2.39 or later has the report under Settings > Migration Report. Update to the latest 2.x first for the newest report version; the team continues improving it based on feedback.

What it does: lists affected workflows and instance-level settings; applies many automatic fixes (each saved as a new workflow version for review, while published workflows keep running on v2); suggests an owner (last editor), lets admins reassign, and emails owners what to fix; filters out unpublished or long-inactive workflows so you can mark “won’t fix”; exports a CSV summary.

Visibility: admins see every workflow; other users see only those they can access. Unlike last year, you don’t need to be an admin to see it.

Recommended path: 1) update to the latest 2.x and open the Migration Report; 2) fix or mark “won’t fix” everything it flags; 3) take a full backup; 4) upgrade a test or staging instance first, then production.

n8n 3.0 release timeline

The 3.0.0 beta is available today (October 27). The stable 3.x release is expected in early December. Follow the release notes for updates.

After the stable release, the 2.x line will receive security and critical bug fixes for 12 months. New features will ship on 3.x only.

Support for 1.x ends on 31 December 2026. If you’re still on 1.x, upgrade to 2.x first; there’s no direct path from 1.x to 3.x.

Expect a short restart during upgrade, just like any other release. Your credentials and execution history carry over.

What is n8n 3.0 and how does it work?

n8n 3.0 strengthens stability, reliability, and security. In Queue mode, manual executions always run on workers; in-memory binary data is removed; the default Code node timeout drops from 5 minutes to 1 minute; and Cron/Interval are replaced by Schedule Trigger. Security hardening includes always-on key rotation, a Slack signing secret, a larger SSRF block list, and unverified community packages disabled by default.

n8n 3.0 vs Zapier comparison?

This article focuses on n8n specifics. We provide concrete 3.0 details (timeouts, scheduling, Docker, migration). The source doesn’t include Zapier’s technical data, so we don’t compare features directly. For your evaluation, list must-haves (self-hosted, binary data, migrations, security) and test both under your workload.

n8n 3.0 pricing?

The announcement doesn’t include prices. It confirms all 3.0 updates apply to self-hosted Community, Cloud, and Enterprise/Business. Your choice depends on deployment, security, and policy needs. For pricing, refer to official n8n materials — this source doesn’t provide numbers.

n8n 3.0 for self-hosted teams?

Yes, self-hosted is supported, now Docker-only. Installing via npm or npx is no longer supported, partly because new security features rely on containers. Kubernetes and Helm deployments aren’t affected. Use the Migration Report, take a full backup, and upgrade staging first to reduce operational risk.

How to run n8n 3.0 beta?

No sign-up is needed: for self-hosted, install like any beta; on n8n Cloud, choose 3.0.0 Beta (early access). Remember: the path to 3.x is one-way with no rollback; take a backup first. Expect a brief restart. Your credentials and execution history carry over.
